As a learning centre, we are taking the following additional steps to fight the spread of COVID19:
1. We are running our holiday programmes online: live online classes with rental kits delivered to your homes for use.
2. Face-to-face sessions are reserved for students above 12 years old or training for competitions.
3. For face-to-face sessions, each child will be seated at their own table with their own building sets, unless collaboration is required such as during competition training.
4. All building sets and relevant furniture are sanitised before and after each child's use.
5. Children's temperatures will be monitored every 1-2 hours.
6. All trainers and students will have to wear masks. No face shields without masks allowed.
If you have other concerns, please let us know at steamengine@ducklearning.com.
About Competition & Training
Duck Learning runs the 2 largest robotics competitions in Singapore:
1) National Robotics Competition (NRC)
2) FIRST LEGO League Singapore (FLL)
At the STEAM Engine Learning Centre, our instructors can train your child's team for the abovementioned competitions.
The competition is highly competitive and we cannot guarantee that your child will be the winning team.
However, we can guarantee that your child will have a beneficial and comprehensive learning experience that allows application of STEM concepts learnt in school and spark a love of STEAM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Art & Mathematics) in them that boosts their academic learning in school.
For NRC competitions, you may contact enquiries@nrc.sg directly to enquire.
For FLL categories, please fill in this form to help us facilitate team formations within the STEAM Engine students: https://cutt.ly/fll-form-team
For NRC Competition training: Not available for 2021
For FLL competition training with STEAM Engine, please refer to this listing: https://cutt.ly/fll-se
While your child can join courses all year long to familiarise themselves with the robotic sets used in the competitions, intensive trainings usually start 3-4 months before the actual competition dates/season.
We generally have around 10 - 15 sessions of training right before the competition season.
For NRC (Competition Season in Aug/Sep)
Intensive training commences in May/June in same year.
For FLL (Competition Season in Mar/Apr)
Intensive training commences in Dec the previous year.
For competitions, they have have strict age groups.
If your children are within the same age group or category, they can definitely form a team.
However, if your children are eligible for different categories, they will each have to find other team members for their separate teams in separate categories.
Some events may have an Open Category where age is not a factor, so you may choose to join such events.
Short answer: Yes.
Long Answer: Yes because...
1) Across the board, joining competitions at the national and regional level is good for one's portfolio as it shows that the child is applying hard and soft skills in their specialisation (e.g. robotics) in a competitive setting.
2) It also exposes them to other students with similar interests and mindsets but different backgrounds to facilitate collaboration and creative/innovative ideas that may impress some schools.
3) The competitions mentioned are well recognised by almost all schools in Singapore (international, private, autonomous and government schools) as they have been around for decades.
We recommend students who are interested in pursuing robotics and STEM-based to not only join competitions but attend our LEGO Education masterclasses which awards the students as Certificate of Accomplishment and also a portfolio of open-ended projects that acts as evidence to show the mastery of relevant skills and knowledge by the child.
